ROCKLAND – Peter Q. Libbey, 74, died unexpectedly, Monday, December 24, 2018 at his home following a long period of multiple health issues.

Born in Rockland, August 2, 1944, he was the son of Dana W. and Priscilla Patterson Libbey. He was educated in Rockland schools until moving to Gray, where he graduated from Gray – New Gloucster High School.

Upon graduation, Peter enlisted into the United States Air Force. He was ultimately stationed in Japan and told of flying missions over Vietnam, during which he could see and feel the strike of ground fire aimed at the aircraft he was in.

Although he was not a socialite, Peter immersed himself in his music which included playing violin since an early age. He was an accomplished fine woodworker and was always seeking to improve his knowledge of any subject or task at hand. He enjoyed a lifelong friendship with Harold Simmons of Rockland.

Other than his father, Peter was pre-deceased by a sister Fern and brothers Dana, Jr. and Scott. He is survived by his mother of Gray; one son William A. Libbey and his wife Ruth of St. George; two daughters, Jennifer K. White and her husband Michael of Kenduskeag, Kathleen R. Libbey of Dedham; three sisters, Jane D. Mascari and her husband Ed of Georgia, Lynn Tibbetts and her husband Chester of Gray, Susan Araujo and her husband Gary of Dover Foxcroft; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews
