Obituary for Ruth B. Phillips

ROCKLAND – Ruth B. Phillips, 100, passed from this life to her Heavenly home, Wednesday, February 27, 2019, following a brief illness.

Born at Vinalhaven, February 15, 1919, she was the daughter of Ralph L. and Estelle Cobb Brown. Ruth attended local schools and was a 1936 graduate of Vinalhaven High School. She was a 1939 graduate of Farmington State Teachers College and later earned her bachelor’s degree from Gorham State Teachers College.

Early in her career, Ruth taught in one room school houses in Oxford County. The next several years found Ruth teaching on Cape Cod, in New Jersey, Boston and finally in Hartford, Connecticut.

She married Clyde B. Phillips in Hartford, July of 1952. They made their home in the Hartford area all their married life. Every summer and for some holidays, they made frequent trips to Rockland, where Ruth enjoyed visiting her parents and reconnecting with her Vinalhaven roots.

For more than 22 years, she worked with Connecticut General Insurance Company in Hartford, retiring in 1974.

Following her husband’s death in 1980, she returned to Maine, residing in Rockland since that time. Ruth was actively involved in her mother’s care during her declining years.

For the past several years she lived at the Methodist Home in Rockland, where she enjoyed the friendship and comradery of many neighbors.

Ruth was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Rockland, and for many years served as a clerk at the former First Baptist Church Book Store. Throughout her life, she was active in local churches, whether singing in the choir, playing piano or helping in any way she could.

Other than her husband, Ruth was pre-deceased by two step-sons, Norton C. Phillips and Richard Phillips, as well as several cousins. She is survived by several cousins.

A funeral service was held March 21, 2019 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Interment will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill, CT.
