Obituary for Nathaniel Carll Cousens

SOUTH THOMASTON – Nathaniel Carll Cousens, died Sunday, December 23, 2018, at his home surrounded by his beloved family after complications of cancer.

Born in Buxton, March 30, 1932 he was the son of Harry H. and Alice Carll Cousens. He graduated from Samuel D. Hansen High School and from Farmington State Teachers College in 1953.

In 1954 he married Anne Waterman of South Thomaston. After two years in the Army, he began his teaching career at Freeport High School. From there he went to Springfield College where he earned a degree in Physical Education and Health.

He taught and coached basketball and baseball at Wiscasset High School, South Berwick High School, Dirigo High School in Dixfield and in 1967 came to Rockland Jr. High School and retired from teaching in 1980.

After retiring from teaching he lobstered full time until 2012. He kept a small boat with a few traps and lobstered until he was in his mid-80s.

He and Anne enjoyed trips to Manasota Key in Englewood, Florida for many years. About his favorite place was their cabin in Beaver Cove at Moosehead Lake where they enjoyed kayaking and swimming.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years; his son, David and wife Lorri; daughter, Sandy Manahan and husband Bill; five grandsons, Alex Cousens, Sam Cousens, Andy Cousens and Katie Wiggin, Heath Curtis, Todd Curtis and Hilary O’Hara and their anticipated son due in late February, and a great-granddaughter Audrey Anne Cousens. He also leaves cousins in Buxton. They are Linda Caouette, Jane Wendlekin, Joan Berry, Roger Carll and Jimmy Carll.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Nate’s family suggests that memorial donations be made the charity of one’s choice.
