Obituary for James Joseph Flanagan Jr.

ROCKLAND – James J. Flanagan, 84, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at the Sussman Hospice House in Rockport.
Born in Waldoboro, May 4, 1935, he was the son of James J., Sr. and Eileen Spinney Flanagan. After graduating from high school, Jim attended St. John’s Seminary in New York.
Returning to his beloved Rockland, Jim has been a life-long resident and fixture here for his entire life. A free spirit, he has worked for several local businesses over the years including, the Courier-Gazette, as a Golf Pro at Rockland Golf Course, and Mazzeo’s Market, to name a few. He had a passion for golf and did whatever it took to be able to spend as much time as possible on the course.
Largely self-taught, Jim was an accomplished pianist and organist. Although he took lessons as a child, he never actually learned to read music. He was well known in several local establishments, entertaining the regulars with his musical abilities. His giving nature even led him to give free piano lessons, teaching many youngsters to play.
Predeceased by siblings, Edward Flanagan and his wife Llada, William Flanagan, Rose Marie Felt, Mary Ann Juco, and Eileen Flanagan, James is survived by his brother, Timothy Flanagan and his wife Judy of Wiscasset; his sisters, Carolyn Flanagan of Barrington, NH, Kathleen Martin and her husband Jeff of Bethel; his sister-in-law Maureen Flanagan of Yarmouth; his brother-in-law Rick Juco of Rockland; as well as many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a very large loving extended family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 30, 2019 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 150 Broadway, Rockland. Interment will follow at Coughlin Memorial Cemetery, Rankin Street, Rockland. In true, Jim Flanagan style, the family requests that all who attend wear ‘Irish green’ in honor of Jim!
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, c/o St. Brendan the Navigator Parish, 7 Union Street, Camden, ME 04843.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
