Obituary for Betsy Pickett Bartholomew

TENANTS HARBOR, ME - Betsy Pickett Bartholomew (Rockwell) died peacefully at home, Sunday, June 2, 2019 after a long and courageous fight against cancer.

Born in 1941 in Hartford, CT, Betsy earned an AA degree from Colby Sawyer College in N.H., and a BS in Education and a Masters (M.Ed.) from Hartford College. She went on to teach third grade for 21 years at Kearsarge and New London, NH elementary schools. She was proud that no third grader ever left her class without knowing how to read.

Betsy was an active member of the Broad Cove Church in Cushing, ME and a valued volunteer at the Marshall Point Lighthouse Museum for many years. She served as secretary of the Lighthouse Committee and on the Shop Committee.

One of the best times in her life was when she met her future beloved husband, Mark Bartholomew at age 14 while on a camping trip to Alaska with her family in 1955. The families finished the wonderfully adventurous trip over what was then a pioneer road together.

Later, their lives crisscrossed again leading to their marriage in 1999.

Betsy loved to travel by motorhome across the country and was an avid fisherwoman and always out fished Mark, in Alaska, Maine and everywhere in between. She greatly enjoyed her time working at different pursuits in Seward, Alaska where she made many friends around the harbor and town. Family and friends cherish the lovely quilts she stitched with love and generously shared. Betsy loved gardening, cooking and raising her two wonderful sons.

Betsy was predeceased by her parents, Dudley and Louise Rockwell of Cushing, ME. She leaves behind her son John Hallowell-Bidwell his wife Kris and grandsons Aidan and Liam of Florence MA; son James Bidwell his wife Ruth and granddaughters Emma and Rachel of Concord NH; stepdaughter, Rebecca Marcoux, her husband Steve, two step grandsons Joshua and Ryan of all Foxboro MA; a stepdaughter Laura Young, her husband Ty and step granddaughter Marin Wilson and step grandson Christian all of Richardson TX.

Deeply missing her are her brother David Rockwell and her sisters, Merle Rockwell, Joan Rockwell and their families.
Betsy will be remembered in the hearts of the many friends and her family whose lives she touched with her generosity and kindness.

A celebration of Betsy’s life will be held at 11:00am Saturday, June 29 at Broad Cove Community Church, 87 Pleasant Point Road, Cushing, Maine. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her memory to the Marshall Point Lighthouse Museum, P.O.
