Obituary for John "Jack" Ewen

TOPSHAM / VINALHAVEN - John Arthur Ewen, 90, passed away on December 9, 2018 at The Highlands in Topsham, Maine, surrounded by his loving family including his devoted wife of 69 years, Carol. John, also known as ‘Jack’, will be remembered as a person who enjoyed life (especially boat house celebrations), his friends, his family, telling jokes, sailing on Penobscot Bay, and living on Vinalhaven, even though he was ‘from away’!

Jack attended Penn State and graduated from Temple University with a B.S. in Business Administration. He was a warrant officer in the US Army and served in occupied Japan and South Korea. He and Carol married in 1949 in Meriden, Connecticut. Jack worked for IBM over 30 years, holding various management positions. He enjoyed assignments in England, where he moved with his family in the late 1960s, and served as General Manager IBM Vietnam. He and Carol departed Vietnam just days before the fall of Saigon in 1975. From there, they moved on to Jakarta, where Jack was the General Manager of IBM Indonesia. In his retirement on Vinalhaven, Jack was an active member of the American Legion and the local Lions Club.

Jack was predeceased by his mother and father, and his two sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret. He is survived by his loving wife Carol, and his family whom he loved dearly: his sister Nancy and brother-in-law Norman; his son John and his former wife Kathryn; his son Peter and his former wife Patricia; his daughter Elizabeth and her husband Timothy; his granddaughters Margaret, Mary, Kathleen, Caroline, and Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews who all have fond memories of ‘Uncle Jack’.

Jack’s family appreciates the outstanding care provided by the caregivers at the Cadigan Lodge at the Highlands, as well as CHANS Home Health and Hospice.

A graveside service with military honors is planned for 11:00 am, June 22, 2019 at Brown’s Head Cemetery in Vinalhaven. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vinalhaven Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, Main Street, Vinalhaven ME 04863; or the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island #300, Topsham ME 04086.

As Jack would say, “It was a great ride.”
